HIP’s are short audio programmes, downloadable to your computer or MP3 music player featuring interviews with health professionals, patients and people from the local community, alongside interesting news features and topical discussions. This unique scheme is part of a drive to utilise new technologies to communicate health information and information on services to people locally.

The first series of HIP’s to be launched feature interviews with Dave Sweeney, Commissioning Manager for Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services for Halton & St Helens PCT. Dave sheds light on issues relating to mental health distress amongst young people in Halton & St Helens, and talks about plans to tackle these issues through redesign and development of specialist children’s services.

Mark Swift, Health Improvement Specialist for Halton & St Helens Primary Care Trust, and Karen Machin, Chair of the Mental Health Forum, based at the United Reform Church developed the scheme to create a means of communicating developments in local health initiatives.

Helen Jarram, Health Improvement Partnership Manager said ‘’I am really excited to see the launch of HIP’s. Podcasts are increasingly being used to access a wide range of information easily and effectively. The introduction of HIP’s means that we can reach even more local people with health information, many of who may have found it difficult for one reason or another to access information in other formats in the past. We will be rolling out the HIP’s over the coming months to offer a range of healthy lifestyle information to local people at the touch of a button’’
