Wellbeing conference brings experts together to find ways of helping those suffering from ‘recession depression’.

A community enterprise on Merseyside is to host a national conference that will explore ways to help those experiencing mental health problems during the economic downturn.

The 3rd Annual Wellbeing Conference ‘Prescribing for Health’ will take place on 8th October in St Helens, and will bring together experts from health, social care and voluntary organisations, to discuss the growing mental health crisis in our communities, and to find ways to help people.

Dr Lynne Friedli, an internationally renowned mental health expert will deliver a key note speech on the role that community based initiatives can play in helping people with depression and anxiety.

In addition to this, the Wellbeing Project will showcase its ongoing community initiative ‘Prescriptions for Wellbeing’ aimed at helping people with common mental health problems.

The scheme enables local GP’s and Health Practitioners to prescribe patients with a place on a 6-week community programme that teaches people how to look after their own and other people’s mental health.

Dr Laura Pogue, Co-Director of the Wellbeing Project CIC, and a local GP explains “The Prescriptions for Wellbeing Scheme expands on the treatment options available to people living in Halton and St Helens who have common mental health problems like depression and anxiety”.

“There is strong evidence to show that community based initiatives that educate people about positive steps to keep well and stay resilient can be highly effective ” explains Dr Pogue.
